# Gear

> Your gear library — clothes, shoes, packs, lights, nutrition. Everything you race with, in one place.

The **Gear library** is your reusable kit. Anything you might race with lives here once — apparel, footwear, packs, lights, nutrition — and you attach the right items to the right checkpoints when you build a plan.

If you race more than one ultra a year, this is where you'll save the most time. Build your gear list once, reach for the same items across every plan.

## What goes in here

Five built-in categories cover most ultras:

* **Apparel** — shirts, jackets, shorts, tights, gloves, buffs.
* **Footwear** — shoes for each terrain, spare laces, gaiters.
* **Electronics** — watch, headlamp, backup light, charging cable, power bank.
* **Equipment** — pack, vest, poles, hydration bladder, soft flasks.
* **Fueling** — gels, bars, drink mix, salt, real food.

Each item can have a photo, a weight, a quantity, and a note.

## Adding products

The **Add Product** panel at the top of the Gear library is where everything starts. Three ways to populate the library — pick whichever is fastest for the product you have in mind.

### Search the curated catalogue

Type a brand or product name into the search box (Nike, Salomon, Petzl, Maurten, etc.). The library checks a curated product database and shows matches with full specs already filled in — weight, capacity, image, and for fuel products the carb / sodium / caffeine values. Click a result to drop it straight into Your Gear.

This is the fastest path for well-known brands. Most of the gear and fuel an average ultrarunner owns is in the catalogue.

### Smart Import from a URL

Paste a product-page URL (a Nike.com page, an REI listing, an Amazon item, a brand site). The planner scrapes the title, image, weight, and category and creates the product for you. Useful for niche items that aren't in the curated catalogue.

A few seconds of wait, then the product lands in Your Gear. Review and tweak the auto-filled fields if anything's off.

### Add Custom Product

Click **Add Custom Product** to open a manual form. Enter the name, category, weight, capacity (for packs/flasks), image, and any notes by hand. Use this when the product isn't online — a custom-built vest, a hand-knit beanie, a brand the catalogue doesn't cover.

For fuel products, the form has extra fields for serving size, calories, carbs, sodium, and caffeine — the same numbers the curated catalogue stores.

## Use in a plan

The real value happens inside a plan. On the [Gear step](/wizard/gear) of the planner, you add products from the library to your race kit, sort them by category (Hydration, Mandatory, Footwear, Apparel, Electronics, etc.), and set a **Carry from** checkpoint for each item — the point in the race where you start carrying it.

* Items with **Carry from = start** are on you from the gun.
* Items with **Carry from = a later checkpoint** join you mid-race — they automatically feed the [Dropbags & Tasks](/wizard/dropbags-tasks) step so the planner knows the item has to be in that bag (or with crew) at the right point.

On race day the mobile app uses the same Carry from values to remind you what's coming with you out of each checkpoint.

## Linked products

If you're an athlete brand or partner, gear items can link to a product page. Useful for sponsored races where the organizer wants athletes to see specific brands at each aid station.
