# Gear

> Pick the products you will carry on race day — shoes, vest, flasks, headlamp, mandatory items, fuel items. One product list, sorted by category.

The Gear step is the single source of truth for what you're bringing on race day. Shoes, vest, flasks, headlamp, jacket, poles, mandatory items, fuel items — all of it lives here as one product list, sorted by category. The list feeds the Fuel step, drop bags, and the mobile app's gear timeline.

## Products you'll use

Add products from your [Gear library](/gear/overview) or saved Collections, then sort them by category in the sidebar — All, Hydration, Mandatory, Footwear, Apparel, Accessories, Electronics, Other.

* **Add Product** — opens a dialog that lets you pick from your Gear library, browse Collections (race kit, night kit, etc.), or search the catalogue. Multi-select supports adding several items at once.
* **Category sidebar** — filters the product list. Each tab shows the count for that category.
* **Product card actions** — every product has four icons: **Edit** (weight, volume, capacity, notes), **Swap** (replace with another library entry — Carry from carries over), **Duplicate** (second instance, useful for a mid-race kit change), **Remove** (drop from this plan only — your library is untouched).

## Mandatory gear

Mandatory gear is a **category**, not a separate tab. Click the **Mandatory** filter in the category sidebar to narrow the list to required items.

While Mandatory is selected, a **Popular Race Presets** section appears underneath. Pick a preset (UTMB, Hardrock, Western States, etc.) and the planner bulk-adds the entire mandatory list in one click — waterproof jacket, pants, gloves, beanie, headlamp, spare batteries, whistle, survival blanket, mug.

If your race isn't in the presets, build the list manually by adding individual products, then save the result as a Collection in your Gear library so future plans pick it up.

## Carry from

Each product has a **Carry from** picker — the checkpoint where you start carrying the item. Defaults to the start line.

Pick a later checkpoint when an item only joins you mid-race:

* Headlamp picked up at Courmayeur before sunset.
* Jacket grabbed from a drop bag before the cold descent.
* Spare shoes swapped at the crew access point.

Anything with a non-start Carry from automatically feeds the [Dropbags & Tasks](/wizard/dropbags-tasks) step — the planner knows it has to be in that bag (or with crew) at the right checkpoint.

## Per-product specs

Each product card has inline-editable fields:

* **Weight** — grams.
* **Volume** — litres, for packs and vests.
* **Capacity** — millilitres, for flasks and bladders.
* **Notes** — anything plan-specific you want to remember.

Defaults come from the Gear library entry. Overriding here changes the value for this plan only — useful when you swap to a smaller flask just for race day.

## What the Fuel step uses from here

Fuel items in this list (gels, bars, chews, drink mix) flow into the Fuel step's product picker — so you can assign carbs, sodium, and fluids to specific products you're carrying. Pack and flask capacity bound how much fluid you can hold between aid stations, which the Fuel step cross-checks when calculating refills.
